Twitter shut down 3,500 accounts in six countries involved in "government propaganda."
The management of the microblogging social media platform Twitter has said that it has closed 3,500 accounts in six countries which were being used for propaganda in favor of the government.
AFP news agency quoted a Twitter administration statement as saying that China and Russia were among the countries whose accounts had been blocked.
The Twitter statement said most accounts were exaggerating the Chinese Communist Party's statement regarding the treatment of the Uighur population in Xinjiang.
China, which is based in the northwestern province, faces accusations of treating ethnic minorities and human rights abuses.

In addition to the 2,048 accounts campaigning for Beijing, 112 accounts linked to a company called Chengyu Culture, which is affiliated with the Xinjiang regional government, have been shut down.
The move by Twitter comes a day after Facebook's parent company Meta shut down 500 accounts campaigning for China over the Corona virus.
These accounts were promoting the claims of the fictitious Swiss biologist Wilson Edwards that the United States was interfering in the investigation of the origin of the corona virus.
AdWords was heavily quoted by Chinese state media in July.
Similarly, some newspapers deleted references after the Swiss embassy in Beijing clarified that no such person had been identified.
Both Facebook and Twitter are banned in China, but Beijing often uses US social networks to improve its position on the international stage.
In addition to China, Twitter has shut down 16 accounts linked to the Internet Research Agency.
It is a Russian company, which critics have called a "troll form" and runs online campaigns in favor of the government.
According to Twitter, "the operation has targeted both real and unconfirmed accounts, from which pro-Russian material on Central African political views has been leaked."
